About ‘SweetlyDesigns’ – Beautiful Handicrafts for a Beautiful World.

We would be launching Sweetly Online Store ( http://sweetly.in/ ) and showcasing beautifully crafted Sweetly Handmade Jewelry at the venue.

• Sweetly Designs creates a sustainable livelihood for rural artisans by providing them access to global markets for handicrafts and empowering them with training, raw materials, knowledge resources and other supports.
• SweetlyDesigns markets beautifully designed handmade jewelry made by inspiring rural women in Dang District, tribal district of Gujarat, India where even today 75% of population is living below poverty line.
• SweetlyDesigns collaborates with Adesh Mahila Mandal, self-help group based in Sajipara Village, Dang District to help rural women increase their income in a sustainable manner, and to avoid labor-intensive jobs that they previously faced as alternatives to jewelry making.

Our work for SweetlyDesigns in the Dang District is being included as Case study by Forest Department for sustainable livelihoods which was presented to JICA, Japanese organization which funds Forest Department to build Self-Help Groups in Gujarat . As of now we work with 5 villages in Dang district and give employment to 15 rural women. Our aim is to employ 500 rural people by the end of 2012.

Also from June onwards we’ve started organizing ‘SweetlyCampfires’ where we take people visit beautiful dangs and understand the work we are doing for dangs. This has open up a very good opportunity for us to get potential international buyers with us to visit the place which in turn creates demand for our products. Saath has created access to basic services to more than 72,000 households and directly impacted 25000+ individuals.

According to him slum people didn’t wanted to be treated as people who require welfare and charity, they were willing to pay, they were willing to work hard, but there were no response to help them achieve their aspirations.

In the second part he explains how they equipped residents of poor urban settlements to become willing customers of basic services and access schemes for livelihoods.

Saath works with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) to ensure that slum residents receive basic sanitation, water and drainage services at the household level and paved roads and street lights at a community level. In exchange, Saath creates mechanisms through which the urban poor can save and pay the user charges. They also monitor the quality of government services with feedback loops. To build trust in the services being provided, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has guaranteed non-eviction to Saath slum residents.

Saath is also demonstrating models of public-private partnership where the urban poor are key stakeholders. For example, it tailored profit-based solutions for electricity supply in Ahmedabad’s slums by altering the user fee, increasing business volumes and bringing in government contribution. As a result, 200,000 slum households today pay for electricity with the business house, Torrent Power, reporting a 30% increase in profits.
